I use synthetic or synthetic/sable mix #2-4 flats for calligraphy. Do a little sign painting with larger flats. Brights or shaders. Teach my students to use brushes before nibs or felt pens in calligraphy (chancery cursive), the sign in this pic below was done with a large flat, about 3/4" or so. sign painted with flat brush, calligraphy

I wanted to get ox hair flats because I wanted to try the lovely effects O'Hara demonstrated that Robert described way back in 2004 (does anyone know how he is). They are cheap and you can get them as wide as 60mm (~2.5 inches). Because they are currently used for gilding work they must necessarily be made so hair aren't shed.

I use rounds and flats but it seems flats have many uses perhaps some are not aware of. They do more than you may think.

I love using round brushes. You can make expressive gestural strokes, or paint with the belly to scuff on foliage shapes. You can come up on the point to make delicate lines. You can splay the bristle tips to make textural marks like grasses, and drybrush effects like woodgrain or sparkles on water. You can "draw" with a round brush. You can make pointillistic dots with the tip of the round brush, you can spatter with a good, flexible round brush. A large round brush (26 - 30) is perfect for wetting paper or creating large soft washes. Squirrel or other natural hair brushes are great for releasing paint evenly, but some mixes of synthetic and natural hair brushes do a good job as well, for example, Cheap Joe's Dreamcatcher brushes, or Robert Simmons' Sapphire brushes. I love round brushes.

I love using flat brushes. You can stroke them in the standad way to get square strokes for windows or masonry, but they have a world of uses that make things easier beyond the obvious. You can stroke them with the broad side on the paper to get a mottled effect for water. You can lightly pat the rough edge to get texture. You can use the side on it's side to get nice foliage edges. You can stamp the tip to get stacatto lines. You can stroke the tip to get nice straight lines as in reflected water. You can use the tip of the corner for painting details without running out of paint. They are great. I have also found that synthetic nylon flats are great fro having razor edges and that the sabeline flats (Grumbacher 6142 to be precise--ox hair) hold little water and so make it easier to get dry brush effects. I love flats.
