Good news, Robert. I spent the day painting swatches out of http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0967962870/knitsnbytes Yellow and Blue Don't Make Green and I kept reaching for the Grumbacher Ultraviolet, which I like a lot. Joanna |

Summary of the old news: We have read here about the termination of Grumbacher Finest Wtercolors as a product line of Sanford's. When I contacted them about it, sanford said that the new Prismacolor watercolor line was a totally new line and not a repackaging of the Grumbacher Finest line. Latest development: I received in the mail the pigment ingredient list and color swatchs of the new Prismacolor line I requested from Sanford. Though a few of the colors have been dropped and some names have been altered, the Prismacolor line does seem to be indeed a repackaging of the Grumbacher line (despite official statements to the contrary)!! I emphasize the word "seem" because I have not actually tried them. The clues though are numerous: The ingredients remain the same. Some were quiet idiosyncratic, such as Grumbacher Finest Indigo being made from Vat blue #1. So is Prismacolor's Indigo . Almost everyother brand's indigo is a mix of standard colors such as lamp black and pthaocyanine blue. The new pthalocyanine's still bear the Grumbacher trademark name "Thalo." Grumbacher Thaol blue was the only one made of PB 15:4, now Prismacolor's is made of that particular type of pthalocyanine blue pigment. The color swathces look identical to the old Grumbacher color swatches. Thus those of you who, like me, are hooked on Grumbacher Finest (not Academy which is a student grade and still around) Thalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, and Raw Sienna need not despair as I almost did. It looks like this new incarnation (Prismacolor) will still supply us with what we need. However, these paints are currently the most expensive on the market. Check Dick Blick for availability. |
