Well, it's good to know that there is something for this
purpose. I did find the Framespace at a framing place.
It costs a dollar a foot but the picture I am using it on is
small so the price wasn't exorbiant. Using matboard
sounds as though it would work just about as well
although cutting it to that small a witdth might be a
challenge. If I need to do this again I will try that
method first to see how it works.

I think there is a similar product on the market called econospace or something like that- it keeps the glass or plexi away from the mat and artwork.

I used to work in a frame shop and the frame guy would cut stips of a material that was in a sheet form that had adhesive on once side. He would put the sticky side to the glass to give a separation between the glass and the frame. Seems like multiple strips could be used, if necessary.

It's been decades ago and I don't remember what it was. Seems like it was an artists' material of some sort. Linoleum carving sheets or blocks? Like a woodcutting, but on linoleum? Something that perhaps would have been cut with a linoleum cutter?

Thinking that makes me also think that taking a square of household flooring material that comes with adhesive already on side side could be used. Slice it into strips, remove the sheet material that protects the glue, and stick it in place.

Wish I could remember exactly what it was.

You can also use thin pieces of mat board that cover only the rabbett (thus don't show) to keep the paper away from the glass... I would use whichever is less expensive!

Thanks John,

I went to several places: art supply stores and a framing
place and did find it.

I'ts good to know that it does exist somewhere other
than in my imagination. I usually mat my paintings, but
wanted these two to extend out to the edges and then
with frames and glass in hand suddenly realized that I
needed something to hold the glass away from the
paper. Duh? Nothing like thinking ahead....

It's called Framespace, I think, and most of the framing catalogs like Light Impressions or Graphik Dimension carry it. It's a rectangular cross section plastic strip with peel off adhesive on one edge.

I have a couple of watercolors that are ready to frame.
The problem is that I don't want to use mats around
them but without mats the paper would be touching the
inside of the glass and that seems like it wouldn't be a
good idea.

Is there some sort of a spacer-like thing that you can fit
inside the rim of the frame which will allow a bit of
separation between the glass and the paper?

What is it called?
