Eugene--Good question. I said that I paint 8 hours a day and elsewhere that a typical painting takes 2 1/2 hours. (In the latter I was speaking of plein air). I work on more than one thing a day. It's basically what I do--paint. |

From conceptual idea to finish painting... 1.Fine Art, full sheet 22x30...a week or more however 80% of it is done inside 4 hours. Then I continue to mess with it on and off for the last 20% 2.Commercial Art: 16x20, 4-5 hours drawing and painting then another 2 hours of computer work on it. |

Eric, I'm 80 years old, and have been painting seriously for about 55 years. I now try to complete about one painting a week, but many of them are small. I think it's necessary to do plenty, because if you do only a few a year you lose your confidence and technique. Yes, I do have stacks- I sell a few, give to friends and relatives, and donate quite a few to charity auctions. Eugene |

50 or 60 pieces a year, Eugene, and it sounds like you've been painting a long time, so you must have quite a stack of paintings also. I'm just curious, how long have you been painting? I've only been painting for 8 years. |

Robert--- On Apr. 17 you said it takes you 2 1/2 to 3 hours to do a watercolor and on Apr. 27 you say that you paint at least 8 hours a day. If my math is correct you must paint at least 650 or more paintings a year. Do you paint as an occupation or simply for pleasure? Sounds like a full time job. And what do you do with this amount of work? Sell it or just “stack it”? I paint about 50 to 60 pieces a year and don’t sell half of them unless I have a one-man gallery show. (which I usually do only every other year) I’m retired and don’t put much effort into selling. Just curious. Eugene |

I paint plein air landscapes and figure paintings with a model, so 2 - 1/2 to 3 hours is the average for a 15 X 22 landscape and 45min for a figure, usually 11 X 15. |

I do not paint for long periods of time but a typical full sheet watercolor can take me as long as 2 or more months!!! I will do a complete drawing to solve all my problems before I ever begin and have been known to do a 2 week drawing! Sorry but I just do it differently I guess! HA! |

For a 22" x 30", it takes about 2, no more than 3 hours. It helps to use a hair dryer to speed things up. You're right, Eugene, preplanning and making a value plan can take a long time. Once the plan is in place, paint fast! |

I would say that it takes me 1 or 2 hours for actually "doing" an 11x15 watercolor. However, finding the subject and the pre planning takes much longer. The old saying- Think slowly and paint fast works best for me. |

Poll--How long does it take you to complete your typical watercolor (please give the typical size)? For me I suppose, typically, it takes 1 -2 hours for an 11 X 15. |
