Hi, Kristen. I use an Ott-lite while painting; the small table lamp that folds up, with 13-watt balanced bulb. To illuminate my subject if I'm painting something like a still life, I use the 23-watt (I think) swirly flourescent bulb that fits in a regular socket, by Phillips, and is relatively well balanced.

The Ott-lite sits on my left side (I'm right-handed), raised (on a small set of plastic drawers holding my tubes & miscellaneous tools), to illuminate my work. I don't think it's big enough to illuminate more than about 1/2 sheet. If I want to work bigger someday, I'll probably rig a way to hang it more centrally, higher over my table. I do like a LOT of light on my work.

My Ott-lite was purchased right after my paints and brushes! It is important to me to use the same lighting, more or less, whenever I'm painting. Also my room is often fairly dark (only one east-facing window); and then I like to paint at night sometimes.

Kristen,
I use a combination. On bright days my windows (east and south) suffice from morning to early afternoon. On overcast days or at night I use ordinary flourescents. I'm of the opinion volume of light is more important than anything else. I've tried "full spectrum" bulbs and didn't notice they were any better than regular. They aren't white like daylight anyhow. From outside the house at night my studio windows looked pink-violet. Whatever color cast a particular bulb has it seems to effect all colors equally, so as long as there's sufficient wattage, I'm happy.

I currently don't use any lights, but I'd like to know how different artists feel about natural lighting, how they compensate for natural light, etc. For use who use lamps, do tru color bulbs and other designs really work?

Hi Kristen,
If you are using an Ott light be sure to have the "Tru Color" bulb as
this is intended to simulate natural light. I am also a fabric artist
and have found such a lamp to be a wonderful help when trying to
work on a cloudy day or at night.

I found an old thread (in 2004 I think) about using Ott brand lights to paint at night. My question is, what lighting preferences and/or situations do you have? Natural light? South-facing windows? If you use lamps, how are they arranged and what kind of bulbs do they have?
