Sure thing Raleigh-- I noticed some past posts re. Wilcox's strategy on this forum. I have employed Wilcox's color mixing strategy for several years, ever since I picked up "Blue and Yellow Don't Make green" at my bookstore. I makes so much sense, is so easy to use, and so utterly complete. You literally can mix any color or any subtle shade and you understand how to get there in advance. Improved my painting tremendously. I'm glad to see you use it too. |

Thanks A.N. I like to stick to the basic Wilcox. |

If one employs the limited palette suggested by Michael Wilcox, one could mix a maroon as follows: a maroon is a subdued violet red, so one adds the complement of violet red, yellow green, to mute it. I would mix quinacridone violet (ie, permanent magenta or rose) with lemon yellow mixed w/a touch of pthalo green. |

Yep. I agree Marie. I love Perylene maroon. Like to mix it with New Gamboge for a beautiful, gold/brown akin to Burnt Sienna but more glowing and translucent. D |

I use either Winsor and Newton or Daniel Smith. The Winsor and Newton is a little more saturated. |

Perylene maroon is a staple pigment for me. By itself, it's a deep maroon. Mix it with cadmium red to get a rich, velvety red. Mix it with quinacridone rose to give a wider value range to the rose. Mix it with thalo green to get a really dark black. It's a very versatile pigment. If you don't use perylene maroon, I would mix your crimson of choice (I prefer benzimiazolone carmine) with black. You could also mix a crimson with a touch of thalo green. |
