I takes a real balance between control and bravura to pull off this sort of painting. It is much more difficult than might appear, I would think. |

Nice fresh, loose, colorful painting Mac. I really like doing still lifes in watercolor. It is one subject that you can do plein air in the studio. I find that I do a lot of still lifes in the winter. |

Wow, Mac, I really like this. It feels as if the painting process is still happening and the paint is still wet! Really involves the viewer. I wonder how still lifes sell? My guess is they would have a very universal appeal-- |

I should mention that the photo cropped off the bottom 2 inches and there is a glass glare white spot immediately above the blue glass decanter. Sorry--best I could get. |

Hi--Mac here. Newbie--just browsing and saw the header. Please critique my painting. I appreciate it. |

Eric, Charles Reid is not recognized as primarily a still life painter. The majority of his paintings are not still life paintings. But, your major point is a good one, Brady is a photorealist painter. The only reason that I didn’t mention it is because I didn’t think it’s common to state the style when naming an artist. As far as who is the best watercolor still life painter, I’m not a still life painter so I can’t make that judgment; therefore I have to go by what I’ve heard still life painters say. |

I'm not much of a still-life guy, but from what I know, a far more well-known still life watercolorist is Charles Reid. I might be wrong, but I'm thinking Reid is more well-known than Brady. I'll also add that I don't pay attention to the photorealistic style in watercolor. Those that like that style, fine. I just don't enjoy viewing it. And painting that way would be a torturous experience. But that's just me. George, a more accurate statement for you to make would be to say she's the best in the PHOTOREALISTIC style of watercolor. Although I don't even know if that's accurate, since I'm ignorant about that style of watercolor. |

Eric, I would think that anyone who does still life watercolor has heard of her. Do you do still life watercolor? |

It's interesting George, that you mention that most think Brady is the best of the best. (still life)...I've never heard of her until yesterday. |

Hi Anne, I agree, Carolyn Brady leaves me cold too – not my style. I only posted her name here because the person who started this thread wanted information on a still life watercolor artist, and most still life watercolor artists recognize Brady as the best of the best. On a side note, the essence of art is something else, but I discuss that on the other thread (popular genre thread). |

I just check Carolyn Brady online. Left me cold. I am sure I could come up with academic reasons why she is good, but I don't "feel" anything when looking at her work. For me such responses are the essence of art. |

Carolyn Brady? The best still life watercolor artist? Maybe for photorealism aficionados, but not for me. |

Check out Jane Freeman! She has a website, a watercolor blog, and a book coming out in the next year. Also, Carolyn Brady is accepted by just about everyone as the best still life watercolor artist there is. |

Thanks for the tip--I am not so much interested in how to paint still lifes as to see some good still life paintings done in watercolor. Does anyopne know of a source devoted to watercolor still lifes? Thanks. |

You could try watching videos by Richard Taylor who starts his clips with still life and then proceeds en plein. Check them out on amazon. |

I have hardly ever seen a watercolor still life. Can anyone recommend a book of high quality watercolor still lifes(instructional or otherwise)? |
