Actually, Jay, you have it right. You send in slides, and then a judge decides whether you will be accepted into the show. If you are accepted, then you send in the actual painting. Awards are usually chosen from the actual paintings. |

Hoooooo boy, did I ever miss the boat! When "entry" was mentioned, I thought that meant you send in slides ahead of time, and the judges check those to see if your work will be allowed into the show....and if accepted, then you take or send in your artwork. (Da Noob shows his ignuntz!) It makes a lot more sense now. But hmmmmm....I also see some doors open for possible hanky-panky. Seems that practice would take away a lot of burden in holding/running a "show", as a way of making them more of a money-making enterprise, a la the multitudes of child model & beauty queen contests. Not making any accusations - just wondering. /Jay |

We had a discussion of this on another thread a while back. I'll stay out of whether slides are a good idea or not; the reality is that most shows still require slides --- at least for now. |

I think the requirement of slides for shows makes about as much since as requiring literary manuscripts to be typed on a typewriter rather than word processed and printed. |

Marie: This information about getting slides from digitals is so helpful to me. Because I live in a rural area, I've had to take my own slides, get them developed and mount them myself. It is such a hassle I just don't show if they don't just Judge the original work and it isn't close enough to for me to deliver the work for judging. This certainly opens up new possibilities for me. |

Many shows require slides for several reasons: 1) Tradition. That's what shows have required for decades, and old ways are slow to change. 2) Some judges don't know how to handle digital images. 3) Some artists don't know how to handle digital images. Having said that, the situation is changing gradually. The American Transparent Watercolor began accepting digital images as well as slides last year. The Georgia Watercolor Society, with which I am affiliated, will begin accepting digital images for its Members Show next fall. Other watercolor groups, I suppose, are beginning to accept digital images as wel.. Most of the big shows --- AWS and NWS, for example --- still require slides. Sorry about the email, Jay. It was filtered into the junk mail pile. I have it now and will respond soon. |

Marie: This is something ("...accepted into...shows with digital slides...") I'm not familiar with, re show entry & how it's done. Sounds like you submit, like, 'photos' to the show committee for preview or something?? It must be a common practice, tho, & I'm wondering about their having slide projectors 'sitting around' to view entries - I thought those were basically obsolete. Guess that tells how long I've been out of the non-digital photography game! *LOL* And methinks, there must be other uses or reasons for having slides made -- Marie, would you mind sharing some? Just out of curiosity. [[ PS: I sent you an inquiry via your website's email addy....since no response I wonder if your filtering might've intercepted & trashed it? Sender name was 'StarHopper' (my astronomy 'handle') ~8) ]] /Jay |

Oh, one more thing. They charge a lot for shipping. You're better off putting as many slides as you can on a single order. |

Yes, I have been accepted into several national shows with digital slides. I can't tell the difference between slides from my digital camera and slides from professional photographers. |

I guess I didn't realize you could get slides from digitals. Just never thought about it. Are the slides good enough for submission to juried shows? |

Hello! I wondered if anyone knew of a place I could get slides made from digitals? They need to be pretty good. Thanks |
