One issue with spraying fixative on watercolor is that it's not reversible. If you varnish an oil painting, a conservator can remove the varnish later and then revarnish it -- and they often do. If you varnish or spray fixative on a watercolor painting then you're stuck with it forever. The idea is that you can clean glass but you can't clean varnish.

I haven't used the fixative long enough to notice anything. Also, when you read the caution label, it makes you a little nervous, about cancer-causing stuff. But I apply it outside, and hold my breath while spraying, so I hope there's not a problem.

When I cut mats, I'm always worried about cutting my finger off, so I guess I'm trading one risk for another.

Thanks, Eric -- I was hoping another method of protection might have been discovered! Have you found any negative effects on your paintings using this method? Are there risks in the process of application? Do you know of any projected long term effects?

Grizrev, the painting should be sprayed with about 3 coats of a fixative, like Krylon or Claybord, matte finish.

Eric,

How does painting on canvass make it possible to avoid the necessity of protecting the watercolor with glass?

Grizrev, I also share in his excitement over canvas. There are a few reasons for his switch, but maybe the biggest reason was because of gallery acceptance. Without glass, the paintings are easier to sell. There's always been a lot of debate as to why watercolors don't get the respect and sell as easy as oils and Lynch thinks it's simply because the artwork is behind glass.

Eric,

Thanks. Mine was a dumb question, not having first researched on Amazon or the web. I guess I was just used to seeing old stuff by Lynch in our local library. Actually did a workshop with him in Salt Lake City a few years ago and should have known better.

What do you think of his recent excitement about painting on canvass? I know he likes a durable surface that can take the "abuse" of some of his preferred techniques. Is that a main reason for his "shift?"

Grizrev- He has about 6 DVD/VHS that came out approx. 4 to 6 years ago, or so.

He also has a DVD that came out recently which is exclusively about painting on canvas.

Has Tom Lynch done any new DVDs? Most of his media stuff is growing moss.

Whitewatercolor will probably eat her heart out, but years ago, Tom Lynch did two long series of demos on Public Television. I recorded most of them. Since he's been mentioned lately, I think I'll look some of them over. Sorry, because of copyrights, I wouldn't want to be caught sharing them.

Does anyone watch online workshops or instruction, or regularly view workshops on TV? If so, what are your favorites, and why?
