Anyone have any great idea for cheap storage ideas for mat boards, foam core and paper. I've seen the units for sale in magazines and catalogs and they are so expensive. Somewhere out there is a cheap easy solution. What is it??? |

Kukana, I bought some heavy sheets of plywood and some sturdy two by fours, painted them, and then stacked them up on the floor of my studio, using a two by four cut to length under both ends of the plywood to separate them (is this making sense?). It's not very aesthetic, but I can store all my "stuff" in the various compartments. |

Hey RMoore, Did you screw the 2x4's to the plywood or just stack them? I wondered if I didn't screw them if they'd shift and get all messed up...but I also like the idea of being able to rearrange them for more or less height. |

Kukana, I thought about attaching them permanently with screws but like you say, I might want to rearrange them at some point. They do shift a bit but generally the weight of your materials will hold them down pretty well. Also, thinner compartments will work best; if the material gets too heavy the plywood will "bow". Someday when I hit the lottery I'm going to get a beautiful, pristine set of very expensive wooden paper drawers but till then.... |

Thanks for the ideas. I've been considering doing something like this on top of a group of storage cabinets, to save my floor space. They will stick out further than the cabinets, but up high it won't matter. Also plan to build some racks using PVC on top of the cabinets for upright items like canvas. I get the assemble-it-yourself storage cabinets from places like Walmart and secure them to the wall. |

In case anyone needs more storage,,,,I buy the large size plastic storage drawers and fit them into an old rolling computer cart. I've got four of them near my work space that hold all kinds of painting things, camera, anything. They will just sit on top of one another. The top of the cart can be used for your palette or water. |

Being a collage/mixed media artist, I'm forbidden to throw anything away, so I really have to use every inch of available space. Another little tip - I got one of those little vinyl-clad thingies (technical term!) that you hang ties, belts etc. from and installed it along the top of a bookcase near my work table. I hang all my fancy scissors, brayers, foam brushes, trowels etc etc. from it so that they're always handy. Seems like whatever we do, our stuff always expands beyond whatever space is available. |

I think I may be just a pack-rat (grin), but I hung one of those el-cheapo shower racks (that hangs on the shower spray nozzle), over my work area to hold spray bottles, tape, masking, etc. It has a tray, shelf, and hooks. Actually you could layer them if you needed more than one since they are kind of "A" shaped. Hey, I couldn't just throw it out! |
