I usually use Arches Watercolor Blocks but recently they have been falling apart. The adhesive seems to be poor or not properly applied and the sheets start separating by themselves. Has anyone else had this problem? |

I've noticed that too. I thought maybe I was doing more wet-in-wet. But they should stand up to that, don't you think? |

Ibailey and Scraley, An Arches Representative will be coming by Cheap Joe's shortly and we will inquire about this issue and get back to you. It will probably be four to five days. Thanks, Dave |

Add another person to the list of having my arches block separate before I used it much. Defeats the purpose. |

I can't afford Arches all the time. Strathmore may not have the feel of Arches but they use better glue. The only time the sheets separate is when I'm down to the last one or two. |

Sometimes I put strapping tape around the edge of my Arches blocks. It makes separating the sheet a little more tedious, but it keeps the block together. |

Many of my students have encountered this problem and solve it by leaving a white boarder. The boarder can be taped off with a low tack masking tape. This keeps the moisture from reaching the edges. |

Hey Dave: Your message on April 5th said that the Arches Rep would be around about April 10th to repond to our problems with block separation. It is now April 19th. Any information? |

Our rep for Arches has told us that occasionally the blocks are subject to cold temperatures during shipping and this may cause the glue to loosen from the block where it is taped. They would be happy to replace them if this has occurred. In order to check for glue "problems" the block will have to be returned to Canson-Talens so they can test the glue. If you purchased the block from CJAS you may return it to us using the No-Hassle Merchandise Return Form on the back of your invoice. If not purchased from us address to: Cheap Joe's Art Stuff (Arches Block) 374 Industrial Park Drive Boone, NC 28607 Thanks for your patience |

I am looking for some good information on red sable watercolor brushes. There seems to be many different manufacturers at varied prices. Who would venture a guess as to which one is the best, forgetting about the price.? Thanks kramers@erols.com |

to berton v kramer I really like the Yarka kolinsky sable brushes. They keep a good point even when I "swizzle them around" getting a good load of paint. I don't know if Cheap Joe carries the Yarka. I bought mine before I found Joe and I don't remember where I got them. marcieb@epix.net |

cheap joes does not carry yarka brushes, but they can be bought through local art shops or off the web at www.jerryscatalog.com. they are low priced high quality brushes. i prefer them for my sketching work. sometimes they dont point as well as they should. you have to be careful when purchasing for their brushes can be very inconsistent. other than that they are of great value for their cost. chris2 |

INCONSISTENT....NO POINT... NOT MADE FOR GREAT VALUE..THAT MAY BE WHY JOE DOSEN'T CARRY THEM. |

sorry guys, i put jerrys.com down for yarka brushes, but i checked the website and noticed that they were not there. they are carried in the jerrys mail order catalog which can be ordered for free. i believe that can be ordered on the web. chris2 P.S. COOLMOON: some people prefer certain brushes and that is O.K. if someone has a question then i will answer it, not make "smart" remarks about value or quality. |

I really like CheapJoe's Golden Fleece Rounds. They work well for my painting style and are inexpensive enough that I don't feel like I have to insure them before I take them out in the field. I also like the Richeson brushes...but they are not as easy to find so I just use the Golden Fleece for my classes. SUSIE |

Has anyone used theStrathmore"Watercolor Greeting Cards" which has 140#paper? I find their 'all mediums'cards have paper that doesn't take watercolor too well . You can't lift ,glaze, etc .. just have to put color down and leave it. |

Don't bother using Watercolor Greeting Cards, just take any previous watercolor that did not work out and put a mat over areas and see what works and then cut it out. Or cut small greeting card or postcard size pieces of watercolor and do likewise..I was doing this long before Greeting Card and/or Postcard size watercolor came into being. Save yourself ....Pepsi |

I feel like a novice. I just purchased a block of w/c paper and was surprised that it is all glued together. I'm assuming there is a good reason for that. After I paint on the top sheet, how do I separate it from the rest of the block? Don't laugh! |

Hi fotoanne - There's at least one other person in the world who knows how you feel - me. Forty-five years ago I did the same thing. Kept it for longer than I care to remember and never did figure it out - finally disposed of it while moving to a new location. You have probably discovered, or been informed, that the section (an inch or so wide)on the top outside edge of the stack is where you gently insert an instrument (such as a paring knife) and GENTLY slide it around the edges to separate the top sheet from the block...etc., etc. etc. Enjoy |

I've been using (inexpensive) Strathmore blocks, but I'd like to graduate to Arches blocks. Does painting on these blocks require any sort of preparation? Or can I just start painting? Also, I'm thinking about moving up from 15x20 to 18x24 (gee, those Arches blocks are expensive!). Is this size so large as to become cumbers |

hello howard- as far as i know, these blocks come ready to paint on. i did not get the rest of your message, as it is cut off, but i think i know what you were going to ask. i have never heard of any complaints regarding the arches 18x24 block, but if you are used to the smaller size, it may take a little time to familiarize yourself with the extra space it takes up, not to mention the extra painting area. good luck! gabriel. |

Hello everyone! Word to the wise - check your paper before your paint! Ordered some paper a while back and recently went nuts after doing 3 unsuccessful paintings of the same subject! All wound up in the trash, muddy - overworked looking results - terrible! Was beginning to doubt myself when i did a little research and came to find out it was student grade paper! and #90 at that! (grrr... not what i had ordered) i blame myself for not checking it when i got it. i am back to blocks for a while but incidentally, I have had trouble too with the Arches blocks separating (sometimes 2-4 sheets a time) I don't know about cold temperatures, have been painting on them for decades and never had a problem until the last few years. okay frustration is over! thanks for listening! Diane ;-) |

hey diane- i sure hope that you didn't get that block from us, and if you did, give us a call. we will always try to rectify the situation for our customers. as far as the arches blocks go, they are constantly checking the formulas and procedures they use for their blocks to ensure quality. if you feel that the block you are using is less than par from the ones you've used in the past, you can return it through cheap joe's, whether you bought it from us or not. we're at 1-800-227-2788 if you have any questions. -gabriel at cheap joe's. |

I always encourage my students to stretch their own paper by stapling wet paper onto plywood or gater board, rather than using blocks. It doesn't take much time, and the kicker is that paper by the sheet is about HALF THE PRICE (do the math!) of the blocks. Because the paper is really stretched, it doesn't buckle when it's super wet (skies, for example) and dries nice and flat. The staple holes can go under the mat. This is the real solution to Arches blocks coming |

I am also having a problem with my Arches blocks separting--four sheets or more come loose. This is very frustratiing, in light of the additional money I paid to avoid stretching. |

I have submitted work to Juried Art Shows before but now I have four watercolors in an on-line art show. This is a first for me but I think it is a wonderful opportunity for artists to get their work out there. Maybe Cheap Joes would be interested in running a competition sometime. I received an Honorable Mention for "Fence at Corolla" You can see the show at www.juriedartshow.homestead.com Barbara |

Finally read about the Arches blocks here. I must say I prefer Cheap Joe's Kilamanjaro blocks. The paper itself doesn't buckle as much and the paper is white! The Arches blocks, both hot and cold-pressed are noticeably yellow. I'm calling tomorrow and returning 4 of them. Too bad I've already used one up! |
