Dear Anonymous,
It's not how much time you put into a painting that makes it professional, it's how much of your life's experience and feeling you put into it that makes people want to look at it.
You have a busy life that many people can relate to, but few can give expression to. As you go through your day be alert to all the sights and subject matter that make up your life. What are the colors that dominate your world? I am sure they are different from the colors that surround someone working in a factory or office.Real painters are working whenever their eyes are open. Share with us what is unique about your life, and it doesn't matter if it is a simple watercolor sketch or a huge oil painting. What matters is that it is honest and heartfelt. Good luck and keep painting! The art world needs more real people like you expressing their world and fewer professional aestheticians exploring their navels.

When I used to write for a twice weekly newspaper the thought was, "write what you know"
and that is the first thing that came to my mind, "paint what you know or feel comfortable
with". With your confirmation you are beginning a new journey so a sunrise over the hills
would be a most appropriate image to give people. Almost anything to do with nature seems
good in this early spring/easter season. Maybe there will be more ideas on the message
board later.

Gardiangel, I think anything with nature/spring is a good idea, too. It could be a single flower, or a sunrise (as mentioned) or even a very abstract landscape. Just paint something you really would enjoy painting, and everyone else will enjoy it too!!

Gardiangel, how about a still life of one to three objects that symbolize your relationship to Jesus? Maybe a Bible or cross, a flower with a specific meaning, an unleavened loaf and a cup of wine, are just a few ideas. Also, there are books like "The Language of Flowers" (try the library) that explain the meaning of certain flowers (ie. a red rose means love, a pink rose friendship) that could add deeper meaning to your picture.

Gardiangel: I always paint in relationship to spirituality, although contemporary in context. I was feeling a dove in flight over a sky and sun watered background. It represents the growth, peace and the Holy Spirit. God be with you...Pamcasso@Yahoo.com

I have a new class beginning in 2 weeks. Many of my students have taken my classes before and are returning hoping to be inspired ever more!! For some reason I am having trouble thinking of subject matters (Mentalblock) We live on Cape Cod and have done lighthouses, flowers, winter snow scenes, birds, landscapes and some cards... they are a mixed group from beginners to intermediate painters. I was thinking of taking them in my backyard very woodsy and making them frames that they can look through themselves and find their own subject matter. What do you think? THANKS!

In response to Luv2Paint4U. The subject is 'always' from
within. I have my students search for contrast between big
shapes of value and temperature.
